Licensing Information

A dog or cat license is a permit to keep a dog or cat within the City of Stockton, similar to licensing your vehicle. A pet license helps the City track current rabies vaccinations. Plus, a licensed dog or cat can be identified and returned to its owner, if the animal is wearing the registration tag.

A current rabies vaccination and a microchip are required to purchase a dog or cat license.

The Stockton Animal Shelter offers:

  • microchips which include nationwide registration and
  • vaccinations through VIP Pet Care Services Clinic.
    • For vaccination dates, times, and location, please visit their site in External Links below.

In 2014, San Joaquin County Public Health Services received confirmation from the California Department of Public Health Laboratory that a feral kitten tested positive for the deadly rabies infection. The public is advised to vaccinate pets and stay away from stray and wild animals.
